Don’t Lose Focus

6 05 2009

Hey y’all! It’s Mandy here. I just read a fantastic article called “How to Concentrate on Writing.”

Great title, eh? 🙂 Seriously… This article has some great tips on how to focus when we need to. One thing I’ve fought is the discipline of focus. Especially when I use my computer to facilitate my creative process. My computer is also my #1 source of distraction (can I get an amen?!)…

When I’m “in the zone” and the creative sparks are flying, I don’t need this type of discipline. But, let’s face it, how often am I “in the zone?” Not enough. Most of my creativity is expressed through blood, sweat, and tears, which is exactly why I found this article to be helpful.

So, without further ado:

Creative Permission

19 02 2009

I’m learning that what lies at the deepest part of me is an incessant desire to create. And I’m learning to give myself permission to be that person – creative – creating – constantly.

I’m learning that this is who I was made to be. This is who I was knitted and crafted to be. I don’t know why, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to, but I will continue to create.

I read a fellow artist’s words on this revelation in life, and thought many of you creative types would appreciate it as well.

Keep the wheels spinning

Raising the bar of my creative abilities has left me sapped. tanked. dry.

I’ve found a couple of sites that offer tips, with a few overlaps in suggestions:

  • Take a walk.
  • Listen to music.
  • Don’t watch TV. (Gasp! But surely I can still watch Lost streaming from the net, can’t I???)

STICKK to it!

29 01 2009

I’ve been at this whole 2-song-per-week thing for about a month, and I’m starting to get used to the routine… One thing that motivates me is a little account I’ve created at stickk.com.

This free resource/community holds me accountable. I get an email every Wednesday – or two emails,  or three emails – until I’ve logged in and reported my activity for the week: success or failure. I’ve been able to connect with other songwriters, and have seen a few of my “contacts” reach their goals.

Having an account at stickk.com makes me nag myself… I know Wednesday is coming, and I need to churn out some songs to get there.

If you sign up for an account, you can also opt to leave incentives for yourself… If you fail to reach your goal, you can set an amount and type of charity that YOUR money will go towards! Or you can set any type of consequence you want. Public humiliation, pay a friend, etc. Whatever fits you and motivates you!

For those of you who are serious about setting up personal accountability, this is an effortless resource that will nag you.
